  • A blepharoplasty can be performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons. The aesthetic reasons are excess skin on both the upper and lower eyelids, due to increased volume of the fat bags on the eyelids, asymmetries between one eyelid and the other, presence of folds in the upper eyelids.

The functional reasons why a blepharoplasty is performed are mainly a drooping of the upper eyelid that can interfere with vision, an asymmetry of the eyelids that is caused by a blow or birth and that requires surgery to correct; correction of deformities of both the upper and lower eyelids due to increased tissue laxity, trauma, tumors or burns, etc.

  • The incisions for upper blepharoplasty are made in the natural crease that is formed when our eyes are open, for this reason this scar is significantly concealed with this natural crease of the eyelid.

In the case of lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made approximately 2 mm below the eyelashes running along the entire lower eyelid. This scar is also barely visible after recovery, since the skin of the eyelids is the thinnest in the entire body and this allows the quality of healing to be much better than in other areas.

  • Sometimes the drooping of the eyebrows causes excess skin on the upper eyelid, so correcting the drooping of the eyebrows will also help correct the excess skin on the upper eyelid. This surgery is called eyebrow pexia, and it is often necessary to perform it for the results to be more satisfactory. If the drooping of the eyebrows is slight, the eyebrow can be elevated through the same incision of the upper blepharoplasty. However, if the loss of the eyebrows is very significant, it will be necessary to perform another type of surgery to reposition the eyebrows in their ideal location.

  • Removing fat bags from the eyelids should not be done in all patients. Each patient is different and therefore will require different maneuvers to achieve ideal results. In some patients the fat pads are large and visible, in these cases it is advisable to remove them, but only the excess of them and not all of them. If the fat pads are removed entirely or if they are removed in patients for whom it is not necessary, the result will be a sunken eye and an older appearance.

Likewise, in patients who have a marked groove under the dark circles, the bags can be used to fill this groove by moving from their original position. This technique is called fat pad transposition.

  • In most cases, blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room with sedation and local anesthesia. That is, a medication is administered so that the patient is asleep during surgery and does not remember anything that happens during their procedure. This sedation is combined by injecting small amounts of local anesthetic into the eyelid area so that there is no discomfort or pain, it also reduces bleeding which will result in less bruising and less inflammation.

  • The surgery time will depend on the maneuvers performed, whether surgery is only performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. Generally it can be from an hour and a half to three hours.

  • Recovery from Belle phalloplasty is a relatively quick recovery. Four days after surgery, the height stitches are removed. During the first days, medications for pain, inflammation and antibiotic medication are prescribed. The most discomfort, such as swelling and bruising, is experienced in the first two weeks. It is recommended to use artificial tears or chamomile drops to keep the eye hydrated and reduce the sensation of dry eyes.

  • The results of a blepharoplasty begin to be seen six weeks after surgery, however the definitive results will be observed approximately six months after surgery, since this is the time it takes for the inflammation in the area to disappear. . For this reason, during the first weeks it is likely that the results will not be completely satisfactory, since the area is very inflamed and this could cause a perception of unsatisfactory results.
